Digital Health
Clinic visits for the monitoring of individuals living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are typically scheduled every few months. To avoid the need for urgent care, such as unplanned hospitalizations or visits to the emergency department, we can use technology to connect patients to their healthcare providers between clinic visits.
Dr. Neeraj Narula and Dr. John Marshall at McMaster University Medical Centre are using a digital health mobile application to improve access to information and healthcare providers.
The application, called MyGut, not only supports individuals living with IBD in understanding and following their illness, but also improves communication with their healthcare providers by allowing users to share their health information in-between appointments.
The MyGut app has two versions: MyGut mobile for people with IBD and MyGut Provider Portal for healthcare providers.
MyGut™ Mobile App
To support patients throughout their journey with IBD, the MyGut mobile app features include the following:
- daily entry of symptoms and lifestyle habits;
- articles about IBD;
- questionnaires to assess your health;
- printable health report cards that can be emailed to healthcare providers; and
- text messaging directly to healthcare providers.
MyGut Provider Portal
The MyGut mobile app sends the responses to the MyGut Provider Portal, which is used by healthcare providers to view their patients’ health status. A referral code must be given to a patient by their healthcare team to connect the information in the mobile app to the profile on the Provider Portal. The referral code is provided to a patient before they register on the MyGut mobile app.
Designed by healthcare providers, the MyGut Provider Portal features include the following:
- notifications when their patient enters a response that may need their attention;
- two-way text messaging directly to their patients; and
- printable health report card.
Once the MyGut mobile app and MyGut Provider Portal have been pilot tested, it will be available nationally to IBD healthcare providers and their patients.
